‘At San Polo, we are the custodians of an extraordinary place: Podernovi, a landscape of rare beauty and prestige in Montalcino. Here, tradition meets innovation, shaping a contemporary expression of this historic terroir. With deep respect for nature, sustainability, and the people who work with us, we craft wines that embody the elegance, authenticity, and ethical values that define our vision. This is the future we envision for our project: a future built on ethics and the protection of land and people. With humility and pride, we will continue to work with dedication to bring this vision to life, crafting wines that reflect our values and our deep respect for this unique territory.’

San Polo

Located a short drive from Florence, Siena and the sea, Brunello di Montalcino was the first red wine producing region in Italy to receive DOCG status. San Polo is an organic producer of Brunello di Montalcino owned by famed winemaker Marilisa Allegrini and her two daughters, Carlotta and Caterina. A wine industry icon, Marilisa Allegrini was the first Italian woman to be featured solo on the cover of the Wine Spectator.

Located on the cooler, high-elevation side of Montalcino, in what was once the original and only zone delineated for the production of Brunello di Montalcino, San Polo comprises 54 acres of organically-farmed land and focuses on regenerative viticulture. The first winery in Tuscany to obtain CasaClima Certification (similar to LEED certification), all wines are 100% estate-grown and bottled.

2024 marks the start of an exciting, new chapter in Marilisa Allegrini’s illustrious wine career. Stepping away from her longtime position as CEO of the Allegrini estate, Marilisa has shifted focus to her beloved Tuscan estate, San Polo. Today, Marilisa continues her winemaking legacy by bringing industry expertise and an undying passion for wine to San Polo, together with her daughters by her side.
Marilisa’s daughter, Carlotta, currently runs San Polo and has an intimate knowledge of the estate and the surrounding region of Montalcino. Carlotta graduated magna cum laude in medicine from the University of Florence and she, along with winemaker Riccardo Fratton, has been an integral force in converting the estate to organic viticulture. Carlotta actively engages in regenerative agriculture at San Polo, implementing a wide range of sustainable practices designed to leave soils healthier and to improve the natural immuno-response of the surrounding ecosystem by bolstering local flora and fauna.

Region

Within Montalcino, many different styles of Brunello are produced due to the variations in altitude, exposure, micro-climate, and soil found in this incredibly diverse appellation.
San Polo is located in the highest elevation subregion of Montalcino, which benefits from cool nights and significant diurnal shifts. These temperature swings are coupled with less humidity and more wind, promoting vine health at San Polo. The nearby extinct volcano of Mount Amiata contributes to San Polo’s singular terroir through ancient pyroclastic deposits, while protecting the estate from south-easternly winds. This unique combination of elements provides San Polo with its signature style of elegant, savory, and age-worthy wines.
Sustainability
San Polo is dedicated to regenerative agriculture, a farming and grape growing approach used to improve and revitalize soil health, increase biodiversity and enhance ecosystem resilience.

Supporting Biodiversity:
The winery supports biodiversity by planting diverse cover crops and preserving the natural vegetation around the vineyard. This fosters a healthy habitat for wildlife and beneficial insects that aid in pest control and pollination.
Organic Farming:
Committed to organic methods, San Polo avoids synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, opting instead for natural pest control and organic fertilizers to maintain ecosystem balance. By dry farming and incorporating agroforestry practices such as soil carbon management, San Polo also contributes to carbon capture and storage, supporting efforts against climate change.
Sustainable Architecture:
San Polo’s winery was built underground to conserve energy with aboveground flues that naturally regulate winery temperature and humidity. Water is drawn from underground springs and solar panels generate electricity.
CasaClima Certification:
CasaClima is a rigorous quality seal representing a comprehensive dedication to sustainability in the vineyard, winery, and local community.
